I gratulate you also on the presence in your midst of a staff of masters who appear to devote themselves to you in a most uncommon way. Masters little know what influence they have for good or evil over boys who are entrusted to their charge; it is therefore most gratifying to how what Dr. Wright has said with reference to Mr. Machell and one or two others whose names at this moment I do not recollect. I can only in a general way impress upon you, as I have done before, the necessity of perseverance and industry on your part.

As I think I told you last year there is an old Chinese proverb to the effect that learning is more valuable than gold, and that is very true. There is also an English saying which is to this effect: "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Drink deep, or taste not, the Pierian spring." Therefore, following that up, boys, it is your duty to work as hard as you can to repay all the trouble that has been taken in your cause by your masters, and to repay your parents for the expense they have been put to in sending you to this capital institution. My only hope is that if it is a pleasure to come here and present the prizes again next year I shall see as great an improvement at that date as I am very ready to admit I have observed in the appearance and conduct of you all this year. I thank you very much indeed for your attendance here and for the excellent discipline shown by you boys.

I may mention that I was very much pleased with the exhibition of physical drill which was given outside. I trust that the remarks which Dr. Wright made will be modified next year. He said, "The senior boys, or rather men, have overcome a little their national prejudice to physical exercise, which they view as undignified." It is not at all undignified in our ideas. It gives a boy a good carriage. It makes him more ready to receive discipline, and in every way it improves his physique, and as I have always said there is nothing like mens sana in corpore sano—a sound mind in a good strong body. I am much obliged to you all and I congratulate you again upon the results of the examination. Dr. Wright asks me to state that the next term commences on Saturday next, when all you boys will be expected to be in your places. (Loud applause).
